About this Course

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a colorless, highly toxic gas that is characterized by its distinctive foul odor of rotten eggs. It is produced naturally by the breakdown of organic matter containing sulfur compounds, such as in swamps, sewers, volcanic areas, and petroleum refineries.

Hydrogen sulfide is also generated by human activities, including certain industrial processes like petroleum and natural gas production, sewage treatment, and paper manufacturing. Due to its toxicity, hydrogen sulfide is considered a workplace hazard in industries where it is encountered. Workers in these industries must undergo proper training and safety protocols to mitigate the risks associated with hydrogen sulfide exposure.

This online H2S awareness training course is designed to meet OSHA requirements and includes intermittent practice questions to prepare you for the final exam. Please take note, this is not a certification course. It is an hour-long awareness course.

This course meets the following OSHA standards:

  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910– General Industry
    • 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Z – Toxic and Hazardous Substances
    • 29 CFR 1910.1000 TABLE Z-2 – TABLE Z-2
    • 29 CFR 1910.134 – Respiratory Protection
    • 29 CFR 1910.146 – Permit-Required Confined Spaces
    • 29 CFR 1910.146 App B – Procedures for Atmospheric Testing

What is Hydrogen Sulfide?

Hydrogen sulfide, also known as H2S or hydrogen sulfide, is a colorless, combustible gas with a "rotten egg" smell. It is produced when bacteria break down organic materials like animal and human waste, primarily in sewage and oil. Industrial processes like drilling, refining natural gas and petroleum, wastewater treatment, co*ke ovens, tanneries, and paper mills can also produce hydrogen sulfide. It can also exist as a compressed liquid.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can be found in various industries, including oil activities, wetlands, agricultural silos, pits, pulp, paper, food processing, hot asphalt paving, mining, and textile sectors. Exposure to H2S can occur due to bacterial decomposition of organic materials, wetlands, agricultural silos, and pits.

Why Do You Need Hydrogen Sulfide Training?

Workers must be trained in identifying hydrogen sulfide (H2S) due to its rapid reaction and significant impact on the human body. Wearable sensors can detect H2S and alert teams before hazardous levels rise. Choosing reliable monitoring equipment, such as wireless devices, is crucial. Workplaces with H2S risks have specific protocols, emergency procedures, and PPE on site. Training in identification and treatment is essential for anyone working in a H2S gas-possible setting. Knowing when the gas is nearby is insufficient, and it's essential to know what to do if a coworker is exposed and unable to leave the risk area.

Does OSHA Require H2S Training?

Yes, there are specific OSHA requirements for general industry, marine, and construction addressing hydrogen sulfide exposure. State-wide occupational safety and health initiatives are handled by 29 OSHA-aligned State Plans. State Plans may have different or stricter criteria than OSHAs, but they must have standards and enforcement procedures that are at least as effective.

What are the Health and Safety Risks of H2S?

Exposure to hydrogen sulfide, primarily through breathing, can lead to various health issues, with extremely high levels potentially fatal. The effects of exposure vary depending on the amount and duration of exposure, and repeated exposure can cause health problems even at previously accepted levels.

Low concentration of hydrogen sulfide exposure can cause eye irritation, headaches, exhaustion, sleeplessness, digestive problems, and weight loss. However, high concentrations can lead to shock, convulsions, difficulty breathing, unconsciousness, coma, and even death. High concentrations can also cause headaches, impaired memory, and motor function. Cardiovascular issues have been reported at exposure levels over permitted limits, and asthmatics are particularly vulnerable to hydrogen sulfide exposure. The effects may not be felt for several hours or days.
